Singer, Songwriter, actress Kerri Medders covers 'Rising Stars' issue of Ouch Magazine
@ouchmagazineny interview by @rhonda_mcknight
Tell us a little bit about your new EP.
My new EP, “Lot 17”, captures an era of myself as I approach adulthood; what I’ve realized and what I’m moving towards in my life. Music is so exciting, because writing, recording and releasing “Lot 17” while I am 17 is something I’ll always have to look back on, like it’s frozen in time. It’s surreal.
How involved were you in the creating process? Did you write/co-write any of the songs?
I try to be as involved as possible in the creative process of making my music because I want it to be authentic and represent to how I feel. Every song on “Lot 17” besides my cover of a classic, were co-written with my producers Brandon Woodward and Luke Francis.
Who would you compare yourself to as an artist? I don’t know if there is an artist I would be like “Oh! That’s me!” I pull inspiration from so many artists. I like to think of myself and my work as a mixing pot which creates an individual sound of Kerri Medders.
What do you think you bring to the industry that’s missing? If you find artists that have similar vibes as me, it’s almost always guys. I find myself listening to and being inspired most by male musicians, which it really cool for me to bring something new and refreshing into the light as a female artist.
How many songs will be on the EP? Do you have a favorite? There will be 4 song on “Lot 17”. “Cry Cry” is the most personal song on the EP that I wrote to help me move on from a situation. It surrounds the story we all have gone through of 3am thoughts that you shouldn’t be thinking about and how those memories all rush back in at once.
What type of artist do you want to be known as? I think a goal for all of us artists is to be on the cutting edge of what’s to come. I’d love for people to see me as someone who is not afraid to share not only my story, but other people’s stories. I always try to be vulnerable and free on stage in hopes that I can really affect who’s watching and listening and leave them inspired.
Where did you pull inspiration from while creating ‘Lot 17’?
I pull the most inspiration from my own personal experiences. I try to be as honest and raw as possible when writing down my feelings and realizations of the world and people around me.
Where do you call home? What’s the most exciting place you’ve visited in your life so far?
My roots are in Texas, but Los Angeles has really become my creative home. I’ve been here for 7 years now. I love Rome! It’s like visiting a flash back in time. Do you plan on touring in the near future?
Yes! I’m so ready to take my visions on tour and express my music in a live atmosphere. How would you describe your personal style? Aesthetic 70’s.
Classic with an edge and a touch of vintage.
What are your top 2 pet peeves? When I tell someone my age and they kind of tune out, because they think I’m not serious with what I do and they treat me like I’m 10 and don’t know anything yet… After I pay for something and they hand me everything at once; the coins, bills, and receipt. Hahaha it’s too overwhelming!
What makes you the happiest? My music. It’s my place to express everything. Traveling falls into second place.
Where can fans find you? If you type Kerri Medders on any social handle you should find me; Instagram is my love.
What can we expect from you in the future? More music and more shows!
