Fun Hobbies for When Winter Cabin Fever Strikes

Fun Hobbies for When Winter Cabin Fever Strikes

This time of year can be really fun, as there are a lot of things to look forward to, with a variety of events and holidays. However, there can come a time where there is an inevitable lull once the festivities have died down, and the weather is still cool. It can all feel a little anticlimactic, but it doesn’t have to be that way. As a result, it can be quite easy to think about taking up a new hobby in winter. Some like skiing and skating can be fun, albeit a little pricey. But there are some cheaper alternatives of hobbies for winter that can cure any cabin fever that you have, and give you something new to look forward to. Here are some things to try this winter.

Snow Sculptures

If you live in an area that gets blessed with a lot of snow, then don’t just shovel it all away! How about putting your hand to trying to sculpt it instead? Of course, we can all build a snowman. But you can really create some amazing works of art with snow; you just need to have a little time and patience to bring it all together. You could start small, and go from there, and having something like a spray bottle can be handy to keep the snow ‘wet’ (it makes it much easier to mold). Weather between 5 and 30 degrees is what you are looking for, so that it won’t go on to melt.

Go Bird Watching

The winter is a perfect time for bird watching, especially if you live in one of the warmer states. It can be quite easy to attract birds to your yard with seeds, but one thing that you can do is to save money by going to a spot where birds will typically be because of natural food. Birds will be in abundance in areas like local parks and nature preserves. It is a good idea to dress quite subtly to blend in when looking for birds, and being as still and as silent as you can be. Letting the birds come to you is what it is all about, and will make for a much more enjoyable experience.

Fishing

Yes, fishing is still a great hobby to enjoy in winter. Depending on where you live, you could make it ice fishing, but even in other locations, fishing in lakes and rivers will still be able to be done; you will just need to remember to dress up nice and warm for it! Getting some fishing gear from Tailored Tackle can be a good idea so that you are prepared, as compared to summer, some tackle shops and stores near fishing areas could be closed. You should also check on the rules in the areas as some will just be catch and release only.

What are some of your favorite things to do in winter so that you can make the most of the great outdoors? It would be great to hear what you think.
