MOTHER FUTURE SELF

In experimental dance camp in rural Maine sure sounds like a great place to have a long-awaited reunion, no? Sofi and Jordan rekindle friendships and more against a gorgeous backdrop as the pendulum swings between reconciliation and rupture.

Sofi (
Imani Jade Powers) and Jordan (Betsey Brown) haven’t seen each other in years after a mysterious falling out. Now, they find themselves reunited at an experimental dance camp in rural Maine after Jordan arrives to complete a week-long workshop. The majestic backdrop of the woods soon becomes the battleground where old flames rekindle and passions of lust and disdain dovetail into dangerously blurred lines.

Tori Lancaster’s directorial debut treats tension like an adult theme park of wonderfully weird possibilities. Her characters clash into each other to explore how intimate relationships can fray and tear over time. Meanwhile, her work as designer and art director are ever-present, letting audiences feast on sumptuous shots where every frame tells a story. The world of Sofi and Jordan leaves us eager for more: What are the limits we’ll go to for self-preservation? And if we can’t reach out, how long until we succumb to violence? Everything is in play in Mother Future Self as emotions run high.—Casey Baron

Twenty-nine year old Noelle Al Saffan moves to the city to start a new life after her divorce. She’s obsessed with “true crime” podcasts and takes a job at a police station digitizing their old files. Her official work is mundane but, everything changes when a young woman is discovered dead in the desert and the officers need a female present to investigate her body.  Noelle jumps at the chance to participate in police work outside of the copy room and, haunted by the girl’s senseless and mysterious death, she launches her own investigation to identify the victim and solve her murder.

Despite repeated warnings from the Police Chief to stay off the case, Noelle uses her ability to connect with other Saudi women to piece together a picture of who the girl was. Following the advice of her favorite video podcast, she investigates everyone who might be connected to the crime. Noelle doggedly pursues the mystery, putting herself in danger and challenging her preconceived notions about women in the Kingdom, the threats they face, and even the motivations that connect her to the victim.
