What is the key to having a celebrity style for hair?
I’ve been a celebrity hairstylist for over 15 years.
Can you let us know your background and how you trained for this professional?
I attended and graduated from Dudley’s Beauty College, which is a very prestigious cosmetology school. A lot of celebrity hairstylists came from there such as Kim Kimble. After working as a hairstylist for some time, I realized that I had a huge interest in working with celebrities. I moved to New York and worked at the world-renown Rita Hazan Salon. She’s known for the looks behind Beyoncé, J. Lo and more. I worked there and gained my experience in celebrity hairstyling. After that, I moved back to North Carolina and opened my salon, Nafisah's Beauty Boutique in Raleigh, NC.
What hair type do you specialize in if any?
I specialize in all hair types--I love the fact that I can service any and everyone. I have so many clients with many different hair types, so I choose to specialize in all.
What are some secrets tips you can give to readers that you have done for your clients?
I’ve worked with many celebrities. I’ve worked with former Destiny Child star, Michelle Williams, Tinashe, and Erica Mena just to name a few.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
I’m very generous, and I know professional hair tools can be very expensive. (Laughs) I always give my tools away to my clients. They love it! As a hairstylist I also have to switch out my curling irons/flat irons so to give them away makes them so happy. The next time you go to your stylist ask them what they do with their tools after they purchase more-- you might get lucky! (Laughs)
What are your bucket-list career goals?
I want to work on major films. I also would like to work Fashion Week for all of the top cities like Paris and New York; that would be such a dream come true for me.
What advice can you give someone who wants a career as a celebrity hairstylist?
I would say to people who want to start a career as a celebrity hairstylist to work very hard and to never give up. All things take time, and as long as you work hard towards something and don’t give up on it; then it will eventually happen. Also, have a great work ethic because that alone can take you far.
